BL Novels with Manly Bottoms

BL Novels with Manly Bottoms

In my opinion, finding BL novels with genuinely manly bottoms sometimes feel harder than it should be. While there's nothing wrong with softer or more traditionally portrayed bottoms, sometimes you're in the mood for characters who are physically strong, confident, rugged, or simply break away from common BL stereotypes.

In this list, I'll be sharing some of my favorite BL novels featuring manly bottoms. From detectives and soldiers to cultivators and powerhouses, these characters prove that being a bottom has nothing to do with how masculine they are. Hopefully, you'll find your next favorite read here!

Mind The Gap

HEIF Image.heic

Genre: Adult, Drama, Mature, Romance, Smut, Yaoi

Country: South Korea

Chapters: Main Story (4 Volume) and Side Story (5 Volume) [Translation Ongoing]

Adapted to Manhwa

Premise: The story follows Alex (MC, Alpha) and Nathan (ML, Beta). Told from Alex's perspective, the novel begins with his long-standing unrequited love for his best friend, Nathan. Just when their relationship seems to be moving in the right direction, an incident drives them apart, leading to a painful nine-year separation.

Years later, Alex is now a detective investigating a serial killer case. As the investigation unfolds, he finds himself crossing paths with Nathan once again. With old wounds resurfacing and unresolved feelings lingering between them, the question becomes: can they overcome the past and find their way back to each other?

My Review: The description itself was enough to get me camping. The author does an excellent job balancing romance with mystery and suspense, creating a story that remains engaging from start to finish.

One of the novel's greatest strengths is its character development. Both Alex and Nathan grow significantly throughout the story, and their emotional journey feels natural and rewarding. While the romance is undoubtedly the highlight, the serial killer investigation adds an extra layer of tension that kept me turning pages. The combination of second-chance romance, mystery, and thriller elements is nothing short of a chef's kiss.

Heaven Official’s Blessing

HEIF Image.heic

Genre: Drama, Mystery, BL, Shounen Ai, Xianxia

Country: China

Chapters: 244 chapters + 8 Extras (Complete)

Adapted to Manhua and Donghua

HEIF Image.heic

Premise: 800 HUNDRED YEARS AGO, there lived a badass Crown Prince named Xie Lian who was loved and admired by all. Upon coming of age, he ascended to the heavens (the literal, heaven, like he becomes a god) but as soon as he ascended, he descended to the mortal realm.

That should have been the end of his story.

Except… he ascended again?

And then again?

Throughout all those centuries, there was one person who never stopped searching for him. Constantly trying to follow him. And his prayers are answered after 800 years.

My review: One word: Brilliant.

I finished this massive novel in just over two days because I simply could not put it down. I fell in love with every character, especially our ML, San Lang. Despite reading it back in 2021, I still remember how completely captivated I was by the story, and I honestly can't believe I didn't pick it up sooner.

Ever since then, Heaven Official's Blessing has remained one of my top recommendations whenever someone asks me for a BL novel. The characters are memorable, the romance is beautiful, and the emotional moments hit hard.

If there is one novel on this entire list that you absolutely must read, it is this one.

Death Progress Bar

HEIF Image.heic

Genre: Action, Comedy, Drama, Mature, BL, Supernatural, Yaoi

Country: China

Chapters: 276 chapters

Premise: The story begins with Shi Jin, who is left frustrated after discovering that the novel he had been reading was discontinued before the revenge plot could be properly resolved. Before he can even process his disappointment, he finds himself transmigrated into that very novel as a teenager.

Now trapped inside the story, Shi Jin must navigate a dangerous world while trying to survive and change the fate that awaits him.

My Review: Death Progress Bar sat on my reading list for the longest time because I kept putting it off. Looking back, that was a huge mistake.

Once I started reading, I simply couldn't stop. I was genuinely surprised by how good the writing was. One moment you'll be laughing, the next you'll be tearing up, and before you know it, you've become completely attached to the characters.

What I loved most was the relationship between the protagonists. There is very little unnecessary drama or frustrating misunderstandings. Instead, their relationship develops naturally, built on trust, communication, and mutual support. It's one of the healthiest and most satisfying relationships I've come across in a BL novel, and that's saying something because I'm incredibly picky about my reads. If you're looking for a novel with great character development, a lovable cast, and a relationship that will make you smile every time the protagonists interact, Death Progress Bar is an easy recommendation.

Mr. Rong’s Lovelorn Diary

HEIF Image.heic

Genre: Comedy, Drama, Romance, Yaoi, Omegaverse

Country: China

Chapters: 73 Chapters + 12 Extras (Complated)

Premise: The story follows Rong Yi, a tall, handsome omega whose biggest dream is to settle down, find love, and start a family. Unfortunately, that dream seems increasingly out of reach. Despite being an omega, Rong Yi has a strong and masculine appearance, causing many alphas to mistake him for an alpha or lose interest once they learn the truth.

Determined to find his happily-ever-after, Rong Yi continues searching for someone who will accept him for who he is.

My Review: The premise immediately caught my attention, but I have to admit that the first few chapters didn’t completely win me over. In fact, I seriously considered dropping the novel. Thankfully, I decided to stick with it because around Chapter 13, the story really began to find its footing and only got better from there.

Rong Yi is an incredibly lovable protagonist, and it's hard not to root for him from the very beginning. His insecurities, frustrations, and determination make him feel genuine and relatable. As for the ML, he initially came across as rude and somewhat irritating, which made it difficult for me to warm up to him. Fortunately, that changed fairly quickly as the story progressed and more of his character was revealed.

Overall, Mr. Rong's Lovelorn Diary is a sweet and entertaining read with a memorable protagonist. If you're looking for a genuinely manly omega who breaks away from common stereotypes, Rong Yi is exactly the kind of character you're looking for.

Beloved Husband

HEIF Image.heic

Genre: Adventure, Comedy, Fantasy, Romance, School Life, Sci-fi, Slice of Life, Supernatural, Shounen-ai

Country: China

Chapters: 257 Chapters (Completed)

Premise:
The story follows Yan Jing Ze, a man caught in a cycle of reincarnations. To avoid a grim fate, he must find and save his beloved in every lifetime he enters.

My Review:
Beloved Husband is the first novel on this list where the protagonist is the gong (top), offering a refreshing change of perspective. Personally, I enjoy both gong and shou protagonists, so this was never an issue for me. Author 决绝 does an excellent job crafting each arc, with every reincarnation presenting a new setting, conflict, and version of the male lead.

One of the novel's greatest strengths is its variety. While the male lead remains the same person at heart, his personality and circumstances differ in each lifetime, keeping the story engaging. That said, the novel does follow a fairly consistent formula throughout its many arcs, which can feel repetitive after a while. If you enjoy quick transmigration stories and don't mind a familiar structure, Beloved Husband is definitely worth checking out.

I Ran Away After that Rich Old Man was Pregnant with My Child

HEIF Image.heic

Genre: Adult, Drama, Mature, Romance, Smut, Yaoi

Country: South Korea

Chapters: Main Story (4 Volume) and Side Story (5 Volume)

Premise: Gu Yixin wakes up to find himself lying beside a 1.9-meter-tall president who is cool, handsome, and intimidatingly domineering. Before he can even process the situation, he bolts.

What follows is a chaotic and hilarious chase as a wealthy tycoon sets out to find the runaway father of his child.

My Review: To begin with, I have to admit that I'm a little biased.

Actually, scratch that. I'm very biased.

I have a soft spot for mpreg and omegaverse novels, especially when they feature a strong and capable bottom, so this novel was practically guaranteed to catch my attention. Unsurprisingly, it quickly found its way onto my list of must-reads.

The story can feel a little draggy during the early chapters, but it never became frustrating enough for me to consider dropping it. Once the plot gets moving, it becomes a genuinely enjoyable read.

One of my favorite parts of the novel is the ML. Despite his status and appearance, he's surprisingly adorable, and I found myself liking him more and more as the story progressed.

This is also the second novel on this list where the MC is the top. I'll admit that I had some reservations about him. His "Mary Sue" tendencies occasionally made him less compelling than the rest of the cast, and I wasn't always sold on his characterization. That said, I never actively disliked him, and his interactions with the ML were entertaining enough to keep me invested.

Overall, if you're a fan of mpreg, omegaverse settings, and strong bottoms, this is definitely worth checking out.

My Favourite Manly Husband

HEIF Image.heic

Genre: BL, Slice of Life, Mpreg, Yaoi, Transmigration

Country: South Korea

Chapters: 168 chapters + 12 Extras (Completed)

Premise: Jiang Zhen transmigrates into ancient times and finds himself in the body of the village's oldest bachelor, a man neglected and looked down upon by his family in Hexi Village. Drawing on the skills and experience he gained as a soldier in his previous life, Jiang Zhen quickly establishes himself as a force to be reckoned with. Along the way, he also marries a ger who is considered "ugly" by local standards.

My Review: This is another novel on the list where the MC is the top, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Unlike some of the heavier entries on this list, My Favorite Manly Husband is a light and relaxing read that's perfect when you're looking to unwind.

The biggest highlight of the novel is the relationship between the MC and ML. Their chemistry feels natural, and it's incredibly satisfying to watch Jiang Zhen support, protect, and care for his husband, who desperately needs someone in his corner. What makes their relationship stand out is the mutual respect they have for one another. Rather than relying on unnecessary drama, the story focuses on trust, understanding, and genuine affection.

Add in plenty of fluffy moments, and you have a heartwarming novel that's difficult not to enjoy.

Devil Venerable Also Wants to Know

HEIF Image.heic

Genre: Adventure, Comedy, Drama, Fantasy, Shounen ai, Supernatural, and Xianxia

Country: China

Chapters: 80 Chapters + 2 Extras (Completed)

Premise: Wenren E, the feared Devil Venerable and one of the most powerful cultivators in the world, discovers that he is actually a character in a novel. To make matters worse, he learns that despite all his power and achievements, his role in the story is little more than that of a stepping stone for the protagonists.

Determined to understand the plot and change his fate, Wenren E begins questioning everything he thought he knew about his world, leading to a hilarious and surprisingly heartwarming journey.

My Review: Another novel with a Top MC. And we love that.

To be honest, I've forgotten a fair bit of the story since I read it back in 2021 or 2022. However, what I do remember is the feeling it left behind, and every memory associated with this novel is a good one.

There's something incredibly comforting about Devil Venerable Also Wants to Know. In my mind, it's the BL equivalent of the kind of book you curl up with during the holidays. It's funny, heartwarming, and filled with characters you'll grow attached to before you even realize it.

What stands out the most is Wenren E himself. Despite being an all-powerful Devil Venerable, he's surprisingly endearing, and watching him react to the absurdity of his situation never gets old. The novel manages to balance comedy, romance, and cultivation elements beautifully.

Honestly, writing this review has made me want to reread it. The fact that it still gives me such a warm feeling years later is probably the highest praise I can give.

The Submissive Emperor

HEIF Image.heic

Genre: Comedy, Drama, Martial Arts, BL, Yaoi

Country: China

Chapters: 103 Chapters (Completed)

Premise: In a world where political marriages are the norm, Lou Jing, a noble-born man, finds himself chosen to become the consort of the Crown Prince. Although he has little say in the matter, he soon discovers that life at the palace is far more complicated than he imagined.

As the Crown Prince and his new consort learn to navigate court politics, family expectations, and their own growing feelings, they slowly build a partnership that is based on trust, respect, and genuine affection.

My Review: Side note: This is easily one of the best novels I have read so far.

Back in October 2022, I was desperately searching for a novel with a genuinely manly bottom. Unfortunately, I had already worked my way through most of the popular recommendations and was starting to think I had exhausted the category entirely. Then I stumbled across The Submissive Emperor.

After reading the description, I wasn't completely convinced that it would suit my tastes. Still, I decided to give it a chance, and I'm so glad I did.

The MC is the top/seme, a nobleman who unexpectedly finds himself becoming the future spouse of the Crown Prince. What follows is not just a romance, but the story of two people learning how to build a life together despite the circumstances that brought them together.

The couple is genuinely adorable. Their relationship develops naturally, and watching them grow closer became one of my favorite parts of the novel. There's a warmth and sincerity to their interactions that made it difficult for me to stop reading.

Most importantly for this list, the bottom/shou is exactly the kind of character I was looking for: capable, dignified, and undeniably manly. If you're searching for a novel that breaks away from the usual stereotypes, this one is absolutely worth your time.
