July was a surprisingly good month for my drama-watching habits. I went from historical Thailand to hospital time loops, Republican-era mysteries, serial-killer investigations, and wuxia adventures.

In other words, my watchlist had absolutely no interest in maintaining a consistent genre. And honestly? I wasn't complaining.

Here are five dramas that stood out to me in July 2026, whether because of their characters, bromance, mystery, action, or simply because they made me want to click “next episode” when I should probably have been doing something else.

1. Love Destiny

Country: Thailand [Ongoing]
Genre: Historical, Romance, Comedy, Fantasy

Let's start with an older drama that I finally got around to watching: Love Destiny, also known as Buppesannivas.

The story follows Kedsurang, a modern-day archaeologist whose soul finds itself transported back to the Ayutthaya period, where she wakes up in the body of Karaked, a beautiful but notoriously cruel woman. Unfortunately for Kedsurang, everyone around her already hates Karaked. Fortunately, she is very much not the same person. 

What follows is a wonderfully entertaining mixture of historical drama, comedy, romance and fish-out-of-water chaos. Watching Kedsurang navigate a completely different era while slowly changing the way people see her is easily one of the best parts of the show.

And the romance? It has that delicious “we absolutely do not like each other... so why are we constantly thinking about each other?” energy.

The drama also does something I particularly enjoy in historical shows: it makes the period itself feel important rather than simply using pretty costumes as decoration. Love Destiny became a huge hit in Thailand and even sparked renewed interest in historical sites and traditional clothing.

My verdict: If you enjoy historical dramas with comedy, strong characters and a generous helping of fate, this one is worth putting on your list.

2. Triage

Country: Thailand 
Genre: Medical, Mystery, Fantasy, Romance

Now we enter completely different territory.

Triage is one of those dramas where explaining the premise without making it sound complicated is practically a medical emergency.

Dr. Tin is a doctor working in an emergency department who suddenly finds himself trapped in a time loop. Every time the loop resets, he gets another chance to change what happens and save lives, including that of Tol. As the loops continue, Tin begins to understand that saving Tol isn't as simple as changing one event. 

What I really liked about Triage is that the time-loop concept isn't just there to create a cool supernatural gimmick. The repeated events gradually reveal more about the characters and their relationships, while Tin has to figure out exactly what he needs to change.

And yes, there is romance, but the mystery and the actual plot are doing a lot of the heavy lifting. The show keeps you wondering what is happening, why the loop exists, and whether Tin can actually break the cycle.

It also has that wonderful quality where you start an episode thinking, “Okay, I know what's going to happen this time.”

You do not.

My verdict: A great pick if you want something more plot-heavy than a straightforward romance. Time loops, medicine, mystery and a relationship that develops one reset at a time. What's not to like?

3. Cases Between Us

Country: China 
Genre: Republican-era Mystery, Comedy, Bromance

This was one of my biggest surprises of July.

Cases Between Us takes place during China's Republican era and follows Zhao Shaoshang, a young man fascinated by traditional culture, and Yuan Hong, a talented detective. The two come from very different backgrounds, but after becoming involved in a mysterious case, they begin working together and eventually become an unlikely investigative duo. 

And this is exactly the kind of drama I tend to gravitate toward.

Give me two very different men who are forced to work together, gradually learn to trust each other, solve increasingly complicated cases and develop an absurdly entertaining partnership, and I am seated.

The contrast between Zhao Shaoshang and Yuan Hong is one of the show's biggest charms. They don't simply feel like two characters who happen to share screen time. Their different personalities and backgrounds actually influence the way they approach each investigation.

There is also a nice balance between mystery and comedy, which keeps the drama from becoming too heavy.

For me, the best part is watching their partnership develop naturally through the cases. It's not about one dramatic declaration of friendship. It's all the little moments of trust, teamwork and “fine, I guess I'm stuck with you now” energy.

My verdict: If you enjoy Chinese bromance dramas with mystery, comedy and a proper partnership at the centre, don't sleep on this one.

4. Mr. Kill

Country: Thailand [Ongoing]
Genre: Mystery, Thriller, Bromance

And now we get to one of the dramas that made July considerably more interesting.

Mr. Kill follows a murder investigation that begins to resemble a manga almost too closely. A police inspector discovers that the real-life murders he is investigating appear to mirror the manga being read by his sister, raising one very uncomfortable question: is the manga somehow predicting the crimes, or does its creator know more than he should? 

Enter Kay, the manga creator, who naturally becomes a very convenient suspect.

The drama pairs Dew Jirawat and Tee Teeradech in what is essentially a mystery-driven bromance. Rather than making romance the centre of the story, Mr. Kill focuses on the investigation, danger and the developing relationship between its two leads. 

And that is precisely why I enjoyed it.

There is something extremely entertaining about putting two men together in a murder mystery where one is a detective and the other may or may not be connected to the murders. Trust becomes complicated very quickly when your potential partner could also be your potential suspect.

Add the chemistry between the leads, and you have a recipe for plenty of “I don't trust you, but apparently I have to keep you alive” moments.

My verdict: If your ideal drama contains murders, mysteries, suspicious characters and a male duo with chemistry, Mr. Kill deserves a spot on your watchlist.

5. Zhan Zhao Adventures

Country: China
Genre: Wuxia, Mystery, Action, Adventure

Finally, we have Zhan Zhao Adventures, and this one is practically tailor-made for anyone who likes their bromance served with swords.

The drama follows Zhan Zhao, a highly skilled imperial guard who receives evidence connected to an unresolved mystery and sets out to investigate. Along the way, he encounters Huo Linglong and Bai Yutang, and the three become involved in a much larger conspiracy involving corrupt officials, criminal factions and the Xiangyang Prince. 

What immediately grabbed me was the wuxia adventure atmosphere.

There are investigations, political conspiracies, martial arts, dangerous enemies and plenty of travelling from one mystery to another. It feels like a classic adventure story with a modern drama treatment.

And then there is the trio.

Zhan Zhao, Huo Linglong and Bai Yutang each bring something different to the story, but the relationship between Zhan Zhao and Bai Yutang was particularly fun to watch. It has that wonderfully understated bromance quality where the characters may not spend every five minutes talking about how much they care about each other, but they will absolutely throw themselves into danger when the other person needs help.

That is my preferred flavour of bromance.

Give me loyalty demonstrated through actions rather than speeches, and I am sold.

My verdict: For anyone craving wuxia, mystery, action and strong character relationships, Zhan Zhao Adventures is an easy recommendation.

Final Thoughts

Looking back at my July watchlist, I clearly had a type.

Actually, I had several types.

What I love about these five dramas is that they are all different, but each gave me something that kept me invested beyond the basic romance plot.

Sometimes I wanted comedy. Sometimes I wanted mystery. Sometimes I wanted someone to solve a murder. Sometimes I simply wanted two ridiculously competent men to stand next to each other and look like they were about to make the plot everyone's problem.

And honestly, that's what makes monthly favourites so much fun. Not every drama has to be perfect. Sometimes a show simply arrives at the right moment, gives you characters you enjoy, and makes you happily sacrifice several hours of your life to the next episode.

So those were my five favourite dramas of July 2026.

Now I'm off to see what August is planning to do to my sleep schedule.
