Archives: The Nanyang Mystery Episode 1 First Impressions: Is the Bromance Worth Watching?
One of the main reasons I was excited for Archives: The Nanyang Mystery Chinese drama was the pairing of Zhang Xin Cheng and Ding Yu Xi. Put two talented actors in a mystery drama together, and naturally my bromance radar starts beeping.
Premiering on June 11, Archives: The Nanyang Mystery is the latest mystery thriller from the mind of Nanpai Sanshu, the author behind the famous Daomu Biji universe. Set in the Nanyang region during the Republican era, the drama promises a mix of folklore, suspense, and supernatural mysteries.
A Strong Start for the Mystery

The first episode quickly establishes its eerie atmosphere and central mystery. Between the strange maritime incident and the supernatural undertones, the drama does an excellent job drawing viewers into its world without revealing too much too soon.
When I saw that the episode had a runtime of around 45 minutes, I was thrilled. However, I also worried that the premiere would spend most of its time on world-building and exposition. Thankfully, that wasn't the case. The story wastes little time getting to the mystery while still providing enough context to keep viewers invested.
Another concern I had was whether both leads would receive enough screen time. Fortunately, the episode gives both characters a chance to shine, and their presence is one of its biggest strengths.
This is actually my first time watching either Zhang Xin Cheng or Ding Yu Xi in a drama, and I have to admit that I'm already impressed. Both actors are incredibly charismatic on screen, and by the end of the episode, I found myself completely drawn in. If the rest of the series maintains this level of performance, I may have just discovered two new favorites.
The Nanyang Mystery, is it BL?

No, The Nanyang Mystery (The South Bureau) is not a Boys' Love (BL) drama, but it definitely falls into the bromance category.
Since this is only the first episode, it's still too early to make any bold claims. However, the foundation is certainly there. The two male leads have distinct personalities, and the drama appears to be setting them up as partners who will face increasingly dangerous situations together.
What's particularly impressive is how quickly the series establishes their bond. Even in the premiere, there is already a sense of trust and brotherhood between them, making their interactions one of the episode's highlights. Their chemistry feels natural, and I'm already curious to see how their relationship develops as the mystery unfolds.
I also want to give credit to directors Zhou Jin Tao and Yi Lin, along with the entire production team, for bringing this story to the screen. As a longtime bromance fan, I couldn't help but notice a few moments that reminded me of the iconic dynamic between Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan from Guardian. Whether intentional or not, those scenes certainly caught my attention and left me wanting more.
My Verdict After Episode 1
If you're watching The Nanyang Mystery primarily for the bromance, the first episode delivers more than I expected. In just 45 minutes, the drama manages to establish a compelling partnership between the two leads while also setting up an intriguing mystery. Their interactions feel natural, their personalities complement each other well, and there are already several moments that hint at a deeper bond forming between them.
I came into this drama hoping for good chemistry, but I left the premiere genuinely impressed by how much bromance potential was packed into a single episode. If the writers continue building on this foundation, bromance fans are in for a treat.
For now, I'm happily staying on board and looking forward to seeing how the relationship between Zhang Xincheng and Ding Yuxi evolves alongside the mystery.
