Review: Mudborn – Taiwanese Horror Movie (2025)
In this article, I will be sharing my views on the 2025 Taiwanese horror flick, Mudborn. I have made sure not to add any major spoilers and have kept it short so that you can quickly decide whether you want to watch it or not.
The Plot
In very simple words, I can describe the very cliché plot as: a dumb husband bringing something evil into the home where he resides with his very, very pregnant wife, and then all hell breaks loose. Doesn’t that sound familiar?
Haha, jokes apart, the movie revolves around two key points: a murder mystery and a family haunted by an evil spirit. Additionally, it seems the writers experimented quite a bit, as they added some relatively new concepts like virtual reality/gaming, etc., to this usual horror style, maybe to spice things up a bit.
The Characters
The main characters in the story are the husband, the wife, and the exorcist.
A Few Problems
The movie isn’t a masterpiece, and it definitely shows, as there were a couple of things that I found difficult to comprehend, which ruined the overall experience.
Where should I begin?
The biggest issue was how predictable everything was. Like, 90 percent of the time, I knew what was going to happen. Another thing that bugged me quite a lot was the convenience of everything. Even now, when I get reminded of certain scenes, I start getting frustrated. Lastly, there was the use of technology. Like, listen, I get it, we have to use the tech that is available, but over here, sometimes it feels forced.
In short, the plot isn’t perfect, and there are a lot of loopholes. At times, it can get quite frustrating. But don’t get me wrong, there are redeeming qualities, and maybe down the line, the story progresses in the right direction because it has potential (and spoiler spoiler, maybe sequels).
My Overall Take
I believe what makes a horror movie good and really stand out is how rooted it is in reality, because reality is the scariest thing in the world. Many great movies in the past have done this immaculately. But this one, though inspired by reality, feels like it is trying to do too much.
